What Can’t the iPhone Do

January 26, 2009 · 3 Comments

ocarina-iphone-app

Now it’s a bonified musical instrument.  Wind instrument to be exact. Using the microphone as a sensor, the iPhone application Ocarina can produce musical notes using four touch sensors as finger holes.  The app also takes advantage of the accelerometer, using left-to-right movement to control Vibrato and front-to-back movement to control Timbre.

Looks very cool, and since it’s only $0.99, I’m going to download it tonight and check it out.  I’ll let you know how it turns out, but judging by this YouTube video, it appears legit.

Found this cruising around the net.  If you’re any kind of an Entourage fan, you’ll have some appreciation for this.  If you’re not an Entourage fan, become one.  Seriously.

Google 411

October 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’ve used Google’s free 411 text message service before, but this is a whole new deal that integrates Google 411 with applications on your mobile phone.  For example, you can ask about a business and you can say “map it”.  If your phone supports Google maps, it’ll automatically load the map for you on your phone.  Cool stuff!  Here’s their press release video…

The Google G1: To Buy or Not to Buy, that is the Question

September 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So the G1 was announced yesterday.  It’s the first phone in the world to feature Google’s new mobile operating system called Android.  There’s been a lot of buzz out there on the net and all the hype got me wanting one.  But now that the official specs have been released and I’ve seen the hands-on video comparing it to the iPhone, I’m not so sure I want it anymore.  Here’s why…

The Pros:

  1. It’s the first phone ever with Android, +2 on the geeky scale
  2. 3.2 megapixel camera with Auto Focus
  3. GPS
  4. Cheap 3G data plan ~ $35/month gets you unlimited 3G, Edge, and SMS.  Add in voice and you’re ready to go!
  5. It has a full qwerty keyboard: a nice feature, but not a total necessity
  6. PUSH Gmail
  7. Google Maps has street view, a pretty cool feature!

The Cons:

  1. It’s fat.  It looks to be twice as fat as my iPhone
  2. 3G Data on T-Mobile will be capped at 1GB/month
  3. No 3.5mm headphone jack
  4. No A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth Support for listening to music wirelessly)
  5. Only 256mb of internal storage.  It does have an expandable memory card slot, which helps, but more on-board memory would be better for me.
  6. It’s gonna cost $179 with a  2-Year Contract required unless you buy it unlocked/contract-free for $400.  Pretty standard these days, but if you’re gonna compete with the iPhone, T-Mobile should do better.
I’m sporting a 1st-generation iPhone right now that I’m using unlocked on T-Mobile USA, which I absolutely love.  And while I hate AT&T with most of my soul, I could get a shiny new iPhone with 3G, GPS, and 8GB’s of onboard storage for $20 more than the G1.  Plus the iPhone is much sleeker…lets face it, there’s only so much real estate available in a guys pocket.  Below is the Engadget’s youtube video comparing the G1 to the iPhone, see for yourself how much thicker it really is.

Decisions decisions, but I think I’ll wait until LG releases the Prada II later this year.

fit-PC Slim might be my next HTPC

September 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’ve been using my xBox 360 to port video and music files to my home theatre for a while now, but the setup has never worked as well as it could have.  Sometimes the xBox doesn’t play the file type, sometimes Windows Media Player wouldn’t detect the new file I just added to the shared library, sometimes the video skips, etc.  So I’ve been thinking about getting a Home Theatre PC to properly network my media to my 56″ DLP and I think the fit-PC may be the best option.

For $345, its got a 500Mhz processor, 1/2 a gig of RAM, Wi-Fi, a 60GB hard drive and your choice of Windows XP or uBunto.  All this in a 4.3″ x 3.9″ x 1.2″ package, which would hide nicely behind the TV.  Since it has a VGA output, it’ll hookup directly to my TV.  So long as the video card can support a high enough resolution, I’ll probably be picking this up in the next few months.  Hell, with the right power adapter, I might pickup two and start my Carputer project!

Check it out over at fit-PC.com
